Commercial Advisor Sustainable Energy

Utrecht Full-time (40 hrs) 60% travel across the Netherlands

Do you want to drive the energy transition by genuinely helping producers?

The Dutch energy market is in crisis. The value of solar energy has halved, and a quarter of that is lost to imbalance costs. Negative prices have increased fivefold. Traditional players have been overtaken by the energy transition and can't keep up — and producers are paying the price.

At Balanz, we believe this has to change. We are the Robin Hood of the energy market: we give solar and wind producers access to value that previously only large parties captured. Not with empty promises, but with transparency, technology, and proven results.

We are significantly cheaper than traditional BRPs and deliver substantially more value. When producers earn little, so do we.

We achieve this by guaranteeing a floor for bankability while sharing the upside from market optimisations with the producer.

What will you do?

As Commercial Advisor, you are the face of Balanz to asset owners — from individual farmers with 2 MWp to professional investors with wind parks of 20+ MWp. You are not a salesperson reciting a standard pitch; you are an advisor who builds trust through knowledge and transparency.

A typical week looks like this:

Monday — Preparation & Follow-up

  • Catch up on emails and update your calendar
  • Analyse expected yields for upcoming conversations
  • Align with the technical project manager on site surveys and installations
  • Prepare pitches for new prospects

Tuesday & Wednesday — On the Road

  • Visit potential clients across the Netherlands
  • First pitch: explain why Balanz is different (and better)
  • Proposal walkthrough: present calculations and answer questions
  • On-site survey: determine where the control box goes, check technical feasibility

Thursday — Close Deals & Hand Off Projects

  • Discuss commercial terms with potential clients
  • Finalise contracts
  • Register client data accurately for a smooth onboarding
  • Coordinate technical installations with the project manager

Friday — Strategy

  • Qualify and prioritise new leads
  • Feed client feedback back to the product and tech team
  • Close out the week together

What makes you successful at Balanz

You understand the market (and the crisis)

  • You know that capture rates for solar have dropped significantly since 2021
  • You understand why negative hourly prices are squeezing producers' business cases
  • You know the difference between day-ahead, intraday, ex-post, and imbalance markets
  • You understand how SDE subsidies work and why smart curtailment strategies are now essential
  • You believe in solar & wind, and can tell our story compellingly
  • You explain why classic PPAs no longer deliver value because they don't optimise for negative prices
  • You demonstrate that Balanz is highly competitive — with data, not marketing speak

You understand technology (without being an installer)

  • You know the major solar inverter brands and wind turbine types
  • You know what a control box does and where it needs to go
  • You understand the difference between AC and DC (not the band)
  • You respect the technical side but leave actual implementation to our project manager

You are driven by impact, not just numbers

  • You genuinely want to help producers save their business case
  • You can discuss IRR and cashflow with a CFO, then talk solar panels on a barn roof with a farmer an hour later
  • You believe transparency and honesty generate more deals than aggressive sales tactics
  • You want to conquer the world — and make it better while doing so

Requirements

Hard Requirements

  • HBO/WO level of thinking and working
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in the energy sector (PPAs, asset owners, BRPs, suppliers)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Dutch energy market, subsidies (SDE++) and market mechanisms
  • Commercial drive — you close deals, but only when they're truly valuable to both parties
  • Valid driving licence and willingness to travel 3 days per week across the Netherlands
  • Fluent in Dutch (spoken and written)

Must-Haves

  • Technical insight — you understand how assets work and what controllability means
  • Analytically strong — you can read, understand, and explain financial models
  • Self-directed — you manage your own week, track your pipeline, and report results
  • Reliable — clients can count on you, even when things get tough
  • Curious — you want to understand how our TRINITY platform works and how we use AI

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with BRP services, imbalance markets, or flexibility markets
  • Network in the sustainable energy sector (project developers, investors, farmers)
  • Affinity with data, tech, and automation

Interested?

Send your CV and a short motivation (max. 500 words) explaining:

  • Why Balanz?
  • What makes you the right person for this role?
  • Which deal or client from your career are you most proud of, and why?

We are not looking for a "hunter" who only thinks about targets. We are looking for someone who gets just as frustrated as we do when a producer with a perfect asset still runs at a loss because their PPA provider is squeezing them dry.

If that's you — welcome to the revolution.
